Baby Clarissa's Baptism.

Baby Clarissa is today to become a member of the family of God and of St Hilary's congregation.  She is to be baptised as this is the symbol that the church uses to welcome all people into the church family.  Some people believe that people should be grown up before they are baptised but in St Hilary's all children can be baptised as babies if their parents wish it.

Read all about Clarissa Elizabeth's baptism here!

Clarissa's mother has brought her along today because she is going to be baptised.

As you can see baby Clarissa is joined by her father, the Rev Ken, her older sister, Poppy, who is sitting on the stairs for a good view, and the vicar with Alice who has agreed to be one of her Godparents.

You can see that Clarissa is wearing her very best here!  Her carrying cape is made of pure silk!

The vicar has bought her a wonderful baby in-pram entertainment system in the form of a duck mobile to make sure she doesn't get upset or bored.

The vicar, the Reverend Gyles Ponsenby-Smyth is now ready to baptise young Clarissa.

Megan, Adele, Tom and Ben have all  have joined the others to watch the ceremony.

Even Homer is here to watch but, as you can see, only his feet are visible as he sits at the top of the first flight of stairs!

The vicar picked Clarissa up, held her over the font (which had some water in that had been blessed) and said these words:-

"Clarissa Elizabeth I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit AMEN"

The vicar poured a small amount of water over Clarissa's head three times, to signify the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  He dipped his finger into the water again, and signed a cross on her forehead.  He then  said:  "I sign you with a cross, the sign of Christ".
Baby Clarissa was very good and didn't cry once!

The vicar then gave Clarissa a lighted candle to represent Jesus Christ, "The Light of the World".  Of course Clarissa was too young to hold it herself so members of her family and Godparents were able to receive it on her behalf

  • We still await the arrival of Clarissa's mother and two more Godparents so our visitors will still  have to use a bit of "lets pretend" until we find suitable dolls to complete the scene!!
  • Godparents are people chosen by the parents who will also promise to make sure that the baby is brought up within the church as faithful Christians.
  • The baby carrying cape has been crocheted by me in white Guterman silk thread.  Don't ask me for the pattern folks - I made it up as I went along using an adult baby pattern as inspiration:-)  I am in the process of crocheting a matching christening gown for our baby Clarissa.  Again made up as I am going along using two adult patterns as inspiration.  So watch this space folks for more photos and story development.

Collect (Prayer) for 4th May 2008

The Sunday after Ascension Day

O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

This site is dedicated to Hilary Doreen Davies who departed this life 26 November 2003 aged 71 after 23 years of chronic illness with strokes, cancer and arthritis.  St Hilary's Church is our tribute to a brave lady who was mother to Sarah, Catherine, the late Rachel, the late John and wife to the late Owen Williams Davies.
